Solar Screen is a permanent public art installation that was commissioned through an InPlace grant by the National Endowment for the Arts. Located in Youngstown, OH, the installation references the city’s work to transform itself from steel manufacturing to additive manufacturing.

The piece is comprised of 3D printed ceramic blocks that are mortared together and infilled with individual, solar-powered LED lights. When viewed in plan, Solar Screen is curved to follow the path of the sun during the day, allowing the photovoltaic cells to absorb as much solar energy as possible. It is then released at night as the lights come on, and then turn off, reflecting the weather conditions of each day.
